Q: What is the difference between vinyl and sublimation?

Posted On: 3/10/2017 By: Omar Castaneda

A: These are two completely different type of heat applicable products. If you are referring to heat transfer vinyl, it is a fully colored poly based material that is meant to be cut with a vinyl cutter so that you can heat transfer single color designs onto garments. This is typically used for letters, numbers, and any 1 color design you can think of. You can also layer vinyl and you may find other types of vinyls such as Standard, Glitter, Flock, Reflective, Metallic, and many more. Sublimation on the other hand is an ink product that turns into a gas form and back into a solid to adhere onto any poly treated substrate. Normally, this is used for transferring a fully colored image onto mugs, plates, tiles, coasters, and many other sublimation blanks. If you want to do sublimation on fabrics, it is only recommended with 100% polyester in white. Since sublimation is a ink based transfer and vinyl is not, you can actually print full image type of graphics onto the shirt instead of just letters and number. However, you are limited to using 100% polyester and typically white to actually show the colors.
