Can I Use My Printer With Heat Transfer Paper?

Heat Transfer Paper is a great solution for transferring full-color images onto your t-shirts, tote bags, sweaters, and other garments. Because there are different types of printers out there, the most common question we get here is "Can I use my {insert printer make/model here} with heat transfer paper?" 

 

 

The good thing is that the answer is usually yes! The video above explains which types of heat transfer paper work with which types of printer. But what if you don't know what kind of printer you have? Here's an easy way to find out if your printer a) is compatible with heat transfer paper and b) if so, which paper should I buy? 

 

 

Step 1: Google your printer.

Look at your printer to find the brand, make, and model of your printer (usually displayed on the top & front). For example, the printer pictured below is a Canon Pixma iX6820. In this case, Canon is the brand, Pixma is the make, and iX6820 is the model.

 

Enter the brand, make, and model and add the words "ink toner" into a Google search. For our printer, we'll search for "Canon Pixma iX6820 Ink Toner."

 

Step 2: The ink will tell you the printer type.

This Google search will show you available options for replacement ink or toner. If your printer uses toner, it's a laser printer. If it uses ink cartridges, it's an inkjet printer. You can also search for your printer's specifications on the brand's website to see what type of printer it is.
